Lake
Fork, just keeps turning out some good fish. In the
month of March, we had 2 over 8, 3 over 9, one 10, and
one 11 pound fish. We know of several more double digit
fish being taken, including 4 over 12. On Wednesday,
March 31, Jason Barnes of Yantis was fishing in two
feet of water and caught a 13.23 lb. lunker. David Campbell
of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirmed the
trophy bass as TP&W
and Toyota ShareLunker #494. The fish also qualifies
him for a $500 cash prize from the Lake Fork Area Chamber
of Commerce and a tackle package worth $500 from Lake
Fork Marina. This is the third ShareLunker caught in
the month of March 2010, from Lake Fork. The other two
were caught by: Randy Williams of Staunton, IL weighing
13 lb. even, on March 16, in 3 feet of water and was
TP&W and Toyota ShareLunker #486 and James Quisenberry
of Emory, TX. weighing 15.61 lb. on March 22, in 10
feet of water and was TP&W
and Toyota ShareLunker # 489.
The past three weeks have been real good if you were
on the right place. This time of year middle and lower
lake (closer to the dam) are producing some HUGE bedding
fish. The Red 3/4 ounce Rat-L-Trap®
works well in stained water and the chrome with blue
back works well in the clear water. Just remember "IF
YOU'RE NOT TICKIN' GRASS, YOU'RE NOT CATCHIN' BASS".
In the upper ends of the lake we have heard some reports
of guys not catching many fish (and there have been
days where we struggled too) but over all, since this
rain and wind pattern has been here the fishing has
been good. We are not catching many fish a day as in
the past but 10 a day has been common, and they are
good quality fish. The day before yesterday, we had
16 fish with a 8.1 lb. for the big fish. It was caught
on a Gene
Larew® 6" Hawg Salt Craw (Pumpkin Pepper
/ Orange) in slightly stained water in about 6 ft. of
water on the edge of a creek bend leading into a popular
spawn area.
There are a lot of fish moving in and out of the spawning
areas in the north end. They can be caught in and around
grass lines, old fence rows, tree lines and creeks leading
into and out of these areas. Most big females after
spawning will suspend around secondary points and creek
channels and recoup from the stress of spawning. These
fish have been rather hard to catch at times, but by
staying with them and swimming lures thorough them we
have managed to catch a few nice ones. The males that
are protecting their fry in the shallows can be seen
chasing on the surface at times. Some of these males
are really nice fish and can usually be caught stick
baits and flukes fished in and around their fry.
It looks like the weather is fixing to get hot and
this time of year you can find a mix of patterns to
fish. You may have to make adjustments as the weather
and other factors of pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn
fishing kicks in. We hope you have a great fishing trip
next time you visit Lake Fork.
Hope to see you on the lake.
