Well
the heat is here on Lake Fork and the deep water bite
has heated up as well! Top water bite is good to fair
early on main lake and secondary points. Deep structure
such as any humps, roadbeds, bridges, fence rows, and
pond dams are holding some nice schools of bait fish
and bass alike. It doesn't take much of a hump to hold
fish, we have found some nice schools holding on fence
rows with only a two (2) foot rise from the bottom,
especially if there is allot of cover. Boat positioning
is critical along with marking these schools. Try not
to drop your buoy marker right on top of your fish,
since this can spook your fish. Mark your hump just
outside of your casting range on one side of these schools
for a reference point and place the boat to where you
can cast beyond the school and pull your Carolina rigs
through the fish on the other side.
The top water bite is still good on Uncle
Josh® BumpNRunBuzzbait, Heddon®
Rattlin Spook, and any chugger type
bait with feathers on the tail. Overcast days provide
good top water fishing well up into the afternoon. We
have had some nice fish where creeks emerge around grass
up into the heat of the day on 1/2 .oz black/blue/purple
Uncle
Josh® Rattlin' Grass Stalker Jigs tailored
with Uncle
Josh® #25A Crawfrog in black & blue
pork trailers or your favorite plastic trailer. They
seem to hold on to the pork a little longer though.
Fish them very slowly (which is hard to do when its
100+ degrees out) and be sure to keep in touch with
you bait as it falls since allot of strikes come on
the fall. The big fish are bites are sometimes hard
to detect since they just inhale the jig so, "When
In Doubt, Set The Hook". It is a little less crowded
in these areas and the bass are feeding on small catfish.
The deep water fishing is in full swing and catching
good numbers of quality bass in 15-25 feet of water.
Our Carolina-rigs are rigged with a 1 .oz weight and
we have increased our leader length to 5-6 foot with
a 3/0 Owner®
Wide-Gap Hook with Zooms®
Centipede and 4"
Dead Ringer. On the overcast days on the humps
the deep fish have been suspending and often can be
seen chasing on the surface. If you are right on top
of these fish a quick shot out with your favorite top
water bait will do the trick. And the faithful Norman®
DD 22 fished in and around these fish will
hook you up with some quality fish.
The night fishing is hard to beat this time of year
on Lake Fork, there are numerous well brushed and well
lighted boat houses that hold good fish. The new Gene
Larew® Biffle Bug in Black Neon or Blackberry/Sapphire
colors and 10" Power Worms fished texas rigged
around these docks has been producing some nice fish.
If the bottom bumping baits aren't getting you bit switch
to the Hildebrandt®
Go Getter Spinnerbait in Black tailored with
a twin tail plastic trailer worked in and around grass
just fast enough to feel the thump from the blade.
Here is a new program that we all should consider.
Its called Texasinvasives.org
which is a Texas-sized partnership to manage non-native
invasive plants and pests in Texas. The partnership
includes state and federal agencies, conservation organizations,
green industry, academia and other private and public
stakeholders who share in the common goal of protecting
Texas from the threat of invasive species.
We hope you have a great fishing trip next time you
visit Lake Fork and Good Luck...
Hope to see you on the lake.
